How Our Test Works
Our speed test uses Cloudflare's global edge network combined with modern browser APIs for precise, repeatable measurements. Here's what we measure and how:
- Ping (Latency): We send a series of small HTTP requests to the nearest Cloudflare edge server and measure the round-trip time in milliseconds. Multiple samples are taken and averaged to account for network variability. Low ping is critical for gaming, video calls, and real-time applications.
- Jitter: We calculate the standard deviation of your ping measurements over multiple samples. Jitter represents the consistency of your connection, lower jitter means a more stable and predictable experience, which matters most for streaming and VoIP.
- Download Speed: We download progressively larger data payloads from Cloudflare's servers and measure the throughput in megabits per second (Mbps). Our adaptive algorithm adjusts payload sizes based on your connection speed to ensure accurate measurement without wasting bandwidth.
- Upload Speed: Similar to download, we send data payloads to the server and measure the transfer rate. Upload speed is often overlooked but is essential for video conferencing, cloud backups, live streaming, and file sharing.
